MOVIE ARCHETYPES
Forest Gump: The Hierophant is the religious values
and systems with which Forest Gump was raised. Those values
kept his life in a forward moving direction because he is consistent
with those teachings within himself.
Wizard of Oz: The Wizard of Oz is the Hierophant when he challenges
Dorothy and her friends to prove they are worthy of the great
gifts they are requesting and wanting them to get the broomstick
from the Wicked Witch of the West. Toto is the spiritual father
archetype because he always follows his spirit even if it might
get him into trouble. Toto always does what is right.
LEVELS
Physical Level: On this level the
Hierophant is about living life from the center of your personal
values. It is about aligning your physical world around your
personal moral codes. Creating balance between what you have
been taught as a child (your spiritual or religious beliefs)
and your present circumstances. It is time to put practical
application to your ideas and values. This is a gentle way of
saying, “Put your money where your mouth is?” It
is one thing to have the idea, but quite another to be able
to practically apply those beliefs and integrate them into your
life. An example of the Hierophant on the physical level would
be choosing to become vegetarian. Now, some people become vegetarian
because they want to help animals and the thought of killing
something is repulsive to them. But some say that they are a
vegetarian in order to be cool and hip in the group of their
peers. The true vegetarian is being honest and congruent with
their choice on a physical level and they live their life in
a state of awareness and understanding. The other is out of
cinque with their mind and their body. The mind wants to believe
the illusion of being a vegetarian but the body is not yet ready
to give up meat. Notice where you might be identified with a
group. Yet, you are not completely aligned with their values.
Ask the question if you are in the group just to fit in, or
if you really believe whole heartedly on the beliefs of this
group?
Emotional Level: What areas are not awakened
within your soul and spirit? Is your emotional life reflecting
your spiritual self? This is about finding the balance between
spiritual awareness and true wisdom. This can mean that you
are questioning religions and trying to find what is true for
yourself by going on a spiritual search. Your emotions may be
contradicting the values you were raised with. Check to see
what the positive intention is in you rebelling against your
upbringing. The positive intention might be that you want to
feel truth for yourself rather than just repeating others words
without feeling and understanding. You may be feeling lost spiritually.
You may be seeking an emotional breakthrough at this time in
your life. You may want to know God rather than simply have
others tell you what God is. Now is the time to find your inner
truth and then reflect that in the outer world. Remember God’s
wisdom is within you. All you have to do is to find the emotional
keys to the inner sanctum of your own wisdom.
Spiritual Level: On the spiritual level the
Hierophant card is showing you are searching for a spiritual
path or teacher. You may be seeking groups that help open up
internal awareness without judgment or blame. You are on a spiritual
journey to reclaim your personal values and beliefs. You are
seeking something that resonates with you on the inside. You
want to find a group that will help give voice to this thing
inside and to give validation to your personal truths. Try to
remember to not bring old judgments and control patterns from
your old religious patterns or beliefs with you. Stay open to
new possibilities and ideas. Be flexible to others beliefs.
They just might have a concept that you could use and expand.
The universe is bringing in new people and perspectives to expand
your awareness of spirit. Realize that there is truth everywhere.
There are so many perspectives of truth because there are so
many types of people. Each person in their own way is trying
to get to some form of God connection and awareness. Stay flexible
and respectful to all beliefs and take what resonates with you
and integrate it into your life. Yet, be willing to let go of
things that do not resonate with your core. Sometimes you will
find one piece of truth in a pile of garbage. Pick up that pearlof
truth and leave the garbage. Just because someone or some spiritual
practice has a truth doesn’t mean that everything is true.
INTERPRETATION
The Hierophant is the spiritual father. This is the
spiritual masculine in its highest intended form. It represents
the positive aspects of religion, culture, and society.
The Hierophant is represented by Taurus because of its strong
determination and desire to adhere to the spiritual foundations
of culture and civilization. Taurus’s lesson is about
dependability and practicability. Taurian energy can be resistant
to change because of its earthiness. Religion also reflects
resistance to change. This card reflects the need of human beings
to have a strong spiritual foundation. A strong spiritual foundation
can become the grounding for your soul. There is a natural evolution
for the soul to find its spiritual place by looking at religions
and social systems. These help you to create your personal spiritual
identity.
If you pulled this card you may be having a conflict with your
inner beliefs, your foundational beliefs or the religion you
were raised with. Your personal values are being called into
question at this time.
This card represents the patriarchal religions, your spiritual
foundations and the culture you were born into. The Hierophant
is the highest form of spiritual values in the male dominated
world. This card can also represent moral codes and values,
or social beliefs that your were raised in. It is how your family
saw the rules of the society and how they taught you. The Hierophant
represents religious values, foundations, cultural conditioning,
and programming. But it can represent what you see as your foundational
beliefs and how you live your life by those rules.
Think of this card, as when you were a child and one of the
first understandings of culture might have been going to church
on Sunday or family gatherings that reflected a group of people
all coming together with a particular style or way of being
with each other. As you grow up, you must eventually understand
the social system into which you were born. You must learn,
as a child, to work within a society. The natural tendency is
to want to find others that have your same values. This allows
you to feel safe and secure. You have an identity and you belong
somewhere. You are not alone and the commonality helps you to
grow and to take risks because you are in a group that accepts
you because you are one of them.
Traditionally, this card tends to represent the Pope, who was
the highest authority, religiously as well as governmentally
in the olden days. The Pope held the ultimate authority in all
arenas at that time. In this day and age, for Americans, it
is the United States Government to whom you must be accountable
if you stray too far outside the socially considered norm.
Even today, you will tend to identify with a religion, a culture
or a race. You do not always realize how much your cultural
identity has a profound effect upon your ideas about yourself
as well as others. In modern society you are more aligned with
groups rather than religions. But they are essentially the same
thing. If you are in a minority group, that group and its beliefs
and ideas affect many subtle aspects of your life. Even if you
are not in the minority, the beliefs that you have identified
with tend to influence your actions every day.
This card asks you to become aware of what your spiritual beliefs
and values are at this time. It might be time to learn to sort
out what is really true for you. How you were raised, gave you
the foundation upon which to build your own spiritual world.
If something is no longer true for you then you might need to
make a few changes to your values.
Religions are a map to the spiritual world. However, the map
is not the territory. You must create your own spiritual foundations
based on what is true for you as well as what is important for
you. The only way to learn is by experiencing life. As you live
life you might be amazed to understand finally why there are
certain directives for spiritual teachings.
Values must be experienced to fully appreciate. In the beginning,
as children, you must abide by the rules because you are young
and you must trust the adults around you to guide and help you
integrate into the society. Yet, as you get older you tend to
challenge those rules because you must find out what is true
for yourself. Eventually, it comes full circle and you see the
value in those rules you originally rebelled against.
When this card shows up, it is important to notice what you
are rebelling against. Create experiences that help you find
what is true inside yourself. Eventually you will come full
circle and truly understand your own spiritual teachings. This
creates calmness and balance in your life.
When you live by your own healthy boundaries and personal values,
your life becomes more balanced and there will be less internal
conflict. When you are not at war with yourself you will have
a lot more energy to use in areas that mean something to you.
